I'm just upgrading from an i5 2400 to a R5 3600. I love tech but I just never had the money to get a new CPU and mobo combo, I did however have to upgrade (due to GPU death) my 560 to a 1060 and even then it was only the 3Gb version. A lot of people have only ever played games on lower and medium graphics settings and just never thought they *needed* to upgrade in 2-3 years. I mostly play WOW which is a CPU bound game I think and even with my i5 2400 I'm rocking medium to good graphics settings at 1080p. Linus is right that I wont be going to adjust the memory timings, I'm just ecstatic that I finally have more than 8Gb of ddr3 ram and a modern CPU. It's a "budget" build but I bet I'll be blown away at the difference between it and my current 8 year old PC when I finally get all the parts to build it.

He really makes quality content yesterday alone he got 50k new subscriber as the internet is banding together to help him out. The only thing he needs is a proper setup. Maybe LTT could help out there and hook him up with proper equipment. It would be nice if this post could get some traction so the right people read this. I worked for some good companies and some really bad ones. In the worst one, employees tried to form the union, but when the owner heard about that he said he'll rather close the entire branch(fire around 200 people) to scare the other branches then allow it. In the company where i work now a have a great boss, great pay. No one ever talks about forming union, because we just don't need it.

So if Uber drivers are employees, they then need to put in 40 hours, and comply with regular full time expectations. The gig economy was always supposed to be a flexible part time, take it as far as you want type of job. How is this hard to understand.

In a perfect world your solution for the Uber employees rights would be correct. But the whole "Just make a competitor to that company" has happened already with Twitter and patreon because people disagree with their politics and guess what, shit didn't work out because the larger companies shut them out of the market.

I would say most enthusiasts care about the nitty gritty right after they are done saving up for a new build. You crunch for months to make sure you are spending exactly the right amount of money on when they are getting. Then you rest for 4 years until you are ready to get back up to speed?

36:00 People tend not to work for Uber/Lyft/Doordash/Postmates as a main job. They tend to work for them as a side-job. Classifying them as employees would make the overhead more expensive, and those services would wind down or cease operations in CA.

While the Ryzen 5600x performs better than the 3700x in gaming, the 3700x performs slightly better than 5600x in productivity applications at the same price point with 2 extra cores which makes the 3700x more useful and gives better performance if you are running visualization, running productivity applications, or video editing with Davinci Resolve.

IF one uses Firefox with NOSCRIPT extension... The ONLY script would run in the browser is that which is white listed or allowed to run by the user as NOSCRIPT blocks all java scripts from running, and if the router and/or PC is configured to run a Secure DNS server rather than the default ISP's DNS server the user will significantly minimize the risk of vulnerability ... And turn the PC off when not in use and use an extension like DISCONNECT to block ads.....Router Vulnerabilities have been known for years ...

As a full time gig worker I'd like to say that in no way would I be doing this work if I was an employee. Since when are employees able to dictate their work hours and what work they actually do? I'm able to work as long as I want and also go home when I want. I make in average 25$ per hour, if they classify me as an employee ID be making 12$ an hour and won't be able to choose my hours or say no to jobs I don't want to do. Those of us actually doing these jobs don't want to be employees. Linus seems very tone deaf on this subject.

Unions WON'T Fix the World, because they share the same defect as any other organization - Hierarchy (The Peter Principle). The way you fix it is by ELIMINITATING Seniority. Once "Vested" (120 days or whatever), everyone should be on equal standing with actual skills and training counting as reasonable advantage. The way unions function now, they just turn one boss into many (often not nearly as good at management, as the traditional direct supervisor boss).

35:50 So in my state we have a flat-rate income tax, everyone is taxed the same %. Their was a measure on the ballot to allow the state to discriminate and increase the taxes of those making more than $250,000a year. The opponents of it put out ads and commercials convincing people that the new measure will allow the state government to increase middle-class income more. So More people voted to not have the Tax law. The thing is, the State could already increase/decrease taxes on everyone. So in 2021 everyone's income taxes are going up, rich, middle and poor. In Califonia the opponents were able to convince the voters that Prop 22 will give a competitive advantage to the big corporation that hurt workers and small family-owned taxi and delivery business

Regarding unions. Company that I worked for few years ago provided IT support to other companies. My team was responsible for Windows servers and ESXi hosts that they were on. One day person from client side yeled at us, that few VMs went missing. We checked the logs and a woman that was a union rep deleted them. Person who yeled at us changed their tone and told us, that we wil have decomission request for those machines in a couple of hours. Few weeks later she asked one of my coworkers how to delete a VM so that it will not show up in logs, or how to delete the logs... When we asked our contact at that company, why she was not fired because that was not even the first time she did something like that, or at least why someone without any IT background still has admin access to core infrastructure, we were told that it is because she is head of the union at that place and even CEO was afraid of her...

I live in California I’m a previous gig economy worker. Sometimes working for post-mates id only make $3.77 an hour. On our ballots the prop 22 was worded very carefully to make it seem like voting yes on it was a vote to classify gig economy workers as employees (because voting yes on something that isn’t already a law usually means yes pass the new law) instead voting yes on prop was actually voting against it. I nearly marked the wrong answer do to the tricky wording I’m wondering how many people marked yes thinking they were voting to protect gig workers. Not to mention the non stop ads featuring “gig economy workers” begging to be classified as contractors (complete BS).

I have nothing against paying your employees more or improving benefits, it's a great tactic for worker retention. The idea that Linus is gonna talk about regulations eliminating employment, raising operating costs and forcing consumer price hikes and calling it "free market" is a joke. It shows his world is the tech world, one of very little regulation, where he doesn't have to experience what the real effects are of all these regulations and not just the rosey goodness politicians preach to get reelected. Maybe Canada is drastically different, I can't say for sure, but tech is one of the few industries that typically has very little government regulation and barriers, partly what makes it great. He asked a viewer "is that what they told you" but doesn't that apply to Linus? Isn't he just reading an article with a slant without living in the area, working for the company, following closely what's gonna happen to your job? Pot calling the kettle black right there.

  58. ThisNameIsFake

    ThisNameIsFake20 days ago

Linus doesn't understand that some people want flexibility with their employment. Linus literally has an independent contractor working for him that wants to stay like that. Is it really hard to understand that some people don't like the idea of losing "100 'bad' jobs for 50 'good' jobs"? Being told half of you will get fired because your job isn't respectful is not something to rile up the base well. Just realize some people want to be able to participate in the gig economy. Don't try to destroy gigs just because you don't like them, let people who want them keep them.

They lobbied, they protested by blocking major routes in the capital, they argued in court that Uber is impossible to regulate and does not treat its drivers well, and also that there would be no QC. It went through, and Uber and similar companies cannot operate here. This was all when Uber started, so almost a decade ago.

Pretty bullshit to be offended by workers trying to unionize. It's not about what you're trying to do or about being a good boss, it's about conflicts of interests. Just like you are free to join an employer's organization without provoking the ire of your employees, an employee should be free to unionize without your scrutiny. As a dane, it's horrifying to hear a boss say he would be "offended" by workers unionizing. In fact, as a good boss who cares about your employees, you should be encouraging it, since you presumably know you take care of the workers.

I don't think the pricing is due to yield issues. This node, AMDs experience with it - *very* mature. I think it's more that since it's impossible to meet demand and TSMCs capacity is maxed out - until they can catch up, they either wanna get 5950X level revenue for those 8C dies, or save them for Epyc.

I'll bet you that AMD releases Zen4 (Ryzen 6,000) before Intel releases anything new. I bet AMD releases Zen4 before the end of 2021.

I guess they have very limited image of what gaming is. You need loads of usb ports for gaming. Keyboard, mouse, TrackIR, Logitech G25 wheel, CH pro pedals and Honeycomb alpha flight controls for starters. Some games also need a gaming pad or joystick. I often have at least 6 devices connected at once.

Linus talking about employee rights erks me. The reason that proposition was passed is because its a trade off between rights. Sure you can have minimum wage and health care benefits... but that could mean that you have to work during a schedule Uber or Lift chooses, not when you want. Or how about the fact that the could have a policy where you can't work at another company-that's a legitimate thing they could do if you're their employee. Or what if they only choose to schedule for say 20 hours a week because if they work you past a certain point they would have to pay benefits for a full time employee instead of part time one? These are a just a few of the rights that you give up when you become an employee, it's about freedom of the worker, not just employee rights. I know that these things can happen because I've been effected by it when AB5 was created, it made it extremely difficult for me to work. They should've repealed the whole law, not just carve out exemptions for certain industries-they've exempted nearly every large industry but small industries are getting killed. I could continue, but I think you can get the point.

I was just watching this, and something that stood out to me specifically was the conversation regarding Prop 22 in California. To me it seems that there are so many people that have opinions about something they do not fully understand. The majority of people who work gig jobs do not work full time. Yes there are people who do work full time. Having said that, The majority of drivers wanted this to pass. If this didn't pass then we wouldn't be able to make our own schedule. We would ONLY be able to work on one specific platform. This also means there would only be a limited amount of people who do get "hired" as employees. I work for both Uber Eats and Door Dash. If it didn't pass, I would have to accept every order. Even if it takes me really far from home. There are certain places, for the most part big cities where there are a lot of opportunities with gig jobs. In Sacramento specifically I make from 18-25$ an hour. I work when I can. I accept order that grant me the most benefit. I do not see how "employees" of Uber or Lyft getting paid above 15$ and hour. The answer to this is simple, do things that particularly benefit you the most. If you complain about not being able to make over minimum wage, then perhaps the infrastructure in your location isn't available. It is out of your control. Do something else, don't ruin it for the majority. I do think it is possible for someone to work 40 hours per week and not be able to afford to pay for health insurance. If you make below a certain amount of money, there are governmental systems that help.

Not being an employee is the benefit. Anyone can get the job (no real hiring/interview process), can work any hours you want (consistent or not up to you), less rules, no real "boss", unlimited earning potential, low tax obligation etc. I love being an independent contractor.
