To be fair to Linus amid the apparent onslaught of Apple fans, Apple has done a pretty good job of making it such that you're either a fan or you're a hater. Because if you're not with them, you're against them, and people love jumping on board that ship. I personally am not a fan of Apple, and it really has nothing to do with their products (I mean, controlling hardware and software allows for far better optimization than Microsoft can achieve with Windows) and EVERYTHING to do with how they manage their company and have historically interacted and attempted to monopolize dealings with software partners (even if the latter has improved some over the last decade). I also have a distaste for the pared-down style interface, but that has more to do with my personal taste than anything, even when it comes to who/what students/professionals I think should buy into iOS vs Windows.

This computer is faster for 10 bit 4:2:2 shooter by 2-3x. Sony a7s 3 and canon r5 are two examples. This is because of h.265 hardware encoding support. (Specifically 4:2:2)

The M1 is a beast. Not my cup of tea, but got one for my wife to replace her 7th Gen i5 / RX 570 Hackintosh. So far it does everything better/faster (including WoW), and considering this is the first release, can't wait to see the 2nd and 3rd Gen!

You have extremely low expectations, no upgradeability ever, no egpu support, no repairability ever, and soso compatibility. No Boot camp. No 32 bit code. no true windows mode. No OSX version, but Big Sur that means osx 10 all the way to Big sur, about 15 different versions, and you can only use one. And cost a mint to add 8gb for $200. Only 2.7 Teraflops for graphics or 256gb more ssd is $200, 1 TB $400, 2TB you might as well bring $2000, and Apple keeps your base 256GB SSD for another sucker.. However the machine learning, AI, rendering, decoding, encoding DSPS for all of the various formats by special computational hardware software combos, is excellent. Not the fastest at single core or multicore, but very good for the price if you stay away from the 16GB 1 and 2 TB systems, which are not as big of a bargain as the base models, because of apples greed on non upgradeable memory and storage.

Used digital storm the people Linus loves, after a couple months the parts started breaking down and would reset three times a day. I finally sent it back after the digital storm cpu fan completely failed and the system shut down. I lost all my data from a fatal system crash. Never had that problem with my windows laptop or any apple computer I’ve ever purchased. Bought one of the most expensive workstations digital storm had and waited almost two months to get it. Apple is gearing up to wipe out all of the “custom high end” computer companies because they are better I gave your people a fair chance but these built computers are not worth the headache or cost. You don’t save money or time with these custom built systems and the system will crash to often for you to get the performance. You want to hate apple because there taking over the computer industry not because of the product. They are better, fast, have great service and trade in options and they have now apple has just created a economical product that nobody can beat price wise or efficiency wise. Give credit we’re credit is do apple is the best computer company by far. RIP custom built systems

I know this is a mini review. However, a year ago I bought the 16 inch MacBook Pro after waiting years, and I am glad I did because the recent announce would still have me waiting. I watched one fanboy review that explained how snappy app launch is on the M1 laptops. I watched how the Chrome icon bounced multiple times before the actual app appeared. On my MacBook pro, Chrome is fully launched before the Chrome icon is able to complete one full bounce. (e.g. < 1 sec). When you compare the Intel and Apple laptops in the future, please provide specs on the SSD and memory because Apple has been guilty of using low quality components in Intel Macs. My 16 inch Mac seems to be the first Mac where the components were not multiple revisions behind what could be found in Windows systems. Lastly, an old trick is to build processors that are designed to do very well in benchmarks. General purpose results will normally be less than that. I will also say I am using Matlab 2020 and VSCode along with other tools, and I rarely hear my fan.

I think Apple needs 16 GPU cores on a mac pro 13' and minimum 36GPU on Mini. M1 is a good processor for Ipad and mac air. I expected better graphics for games because most of the users who switch PCs each year are Medium/Light Gamers. The switch to ARM with only 8 Graphics Units it is not attractive to make the change today, better wait for more 6 months. Better choose AMD with higher specs at the same range price.

Look at the cope in this video. The non-apology is hilarious. This guy says there was nothing to back it up at launch... so I guess he hadn’t seen the already released A14 geekbench scores? The M1 uses A14 cores but higher TDP, so the performance should be a bit better. Anyone who actually follows the chip industry already knew the A14 beat every intel processor in single core. Apple’s claims on the M1 were only a slight stretch from the A14 numbers. Really the only unknown was how many cores and what TDP. It also only took a very short while for actual M1 benchmarks to come out, maybe wait for data before making pronouncements and maintain a bit of humility. Lame take.

Okay, let me share my two cents on this as a fellow UNIX/Linux user. From what I have seen right now the OS is way worse than a KDE Plasma with Latte Dock - and I did the ultimate test here by asking my Mrs. which 'Mac' she would buy and she likes my Linux GUI more, saying that the actual Mac OS looks too complicated . Now let's talk hardware for a bit. 4 'performance cores' and 4 'efficiency cores' are either the same bollocks that I have in my $200 budget smartphone from the 'evil' Chinese company called Huawei or just this hyperthreading thing where I have 4 actually fully featured cores whilst there is 4 more cores without an FPU, so I won't really recommend to run anything on these... So what this really comes down to is a $65 Raspberry Pi 4B 8GB in a MacBook 'Pro' case with an ugly GUI for over twice the price of an Lenovo ThinkPad E595 with 32GB RAM and two SSDs, one of which being an NVMe one. I don't know about you guys but in Germany we call this full on FRAUD. Yes my friends, full on FRAUD, that's what it is! So my suggestion to solve this issue: Either keep your 'old' X86 Mac or get yourself the cheapest Lenovo Laptop there is, get some cool stickers to put on the back and install Linux. And if you want an actually very stylish beyond Apple look and feel I would suggest Hefftor Linux Plasma which just happened to have released a new version which you can download under www.hefftorlinux.net . Welcome to 2021!

Apple's marketing was a mistake. The Mac mini had a lot of issues and for me the performance was a huge disappointment. I know that with optimized applications it has a lot of potential, but the numbers in practice are not even close of what Apple said. They lied. The last Big Sur update solved my issues with the displays, but I still don't see a huge performance increase in the apps I use every day comparing to my MacBook Pro from 2014. The performance difference with an almost 7 year old laptop should be huge, but it is not there, and most apps work at the same speed.

2:53 NOPE. Mult-Stream Transport doesn't work on macOS to drive multiple displays! Apple sucks with this, and MST only works for their 5K/6K monitors to drive single display through 2 DisplayPort lines. I have Thunderbolt Dell WB19TB dock and - no luck with MST. At company when we've got MacBooks Pro - still no luck - we had to switch docking stations to ones with DisplayLink. Just because Apple is stupid enough not to write proper code for MST over last 10 years which they even claim (!!!!) they support (because MST is since DisplayPort 1.2 and they claim they support it, but… nah… not correctly)
